Book Review: iheartlogos – season one

Posted June 03, 2011 - By | 1 Comment

I received my copy of iheartlogos, season one, a book put together by the company of the same name, iheartlogos (www.iheartlogos.com). If you go to their website, it’s pretty self-expanitory. The site takes submissions of logos by designers (at a fee of $10 per logo). All rights and properties of the logos remain with the designer. Once entered there is a period of time where anyone who has registered on the site can vote (by “hearting”) for their favourites. In season one are the 462 top voted logos from last season.

A Book Well Travelled

I should mention that I won this book on a contest run by Graham Smith of imjustcreative (www.imjustcreative.com). If you’re a freelancer or logo designer (or both), you should definitely check him out. Graham has unwittingly (and unknowingly) become a sort of mentor to me (I’m sure he’d be thrilled to hear ;) ). Winning this book via his contest meant that my book had to travel from the USA where it was printed, to Graham’s possession in the UK, and back over the pond to me in Canada.

Hey There, Good-Lookin’

I’ll just take one second to say that iheartlogos, season one is quite an attractive book with a nice satin matte-like finish and because of the quality of paper it’s printed on, it is unexpectedly heavier than it looks. I really hope they don’t change this for the next season.

The Guts

If you enjoy a good read, this isn’t the book for you. But that’s not its purpose. After a very short introduction, the book starts with the 11 top “hearted” logos with a couple paragraphs written by the designers. Some write something as short as saying “this is what you’re looking at” pretty much, while others explain a little more about the process but not a lot. After that are the remaining 451 top logos in order from most votes to least, so naturally, you want your logo to be closer to the front of the book. It’s a good compilation. Many of these logos you’ll see in other logo books such as LogoLounge and all kinds of other websites.

Some Logos I Heart

Below, I’ve listed a few of my favourite logos from the book. By the way, nearly all of the designers of these logos had one or more logos that I’d put in my top 20 so I recommend looking Googling them or viewing their Behance.net profiles (if they have them).
